This is the latest newsletter from one of our diaper suppliers, Broody Chick. Broody Chick diapers are the first FULLY compostable disposable diaper on the market. They are totally plastic free!

BROODY CHICK products are the ongoing results of a mother’s love for her children and her desire to produce the absolute best in natural and chemical free baby products. The skincare products she created are 100% natural, chemical free and colorant free. Soon followed our diapers and wipes, which are also 100% natural and the best she could find, not only for our children but also

With the knowledge of what a mother wants for her child, we have sourced the absolute best in diapers and wipes, not only in style and comfort but also to be fully compostable, environmentally friendly, chemical free and most important, proven ultra safe for baby.

BROODY CHICK, working with Natureworks llc, looked at many textile manufacturers around the world. We searched North America, Europe, Middle East and Asia and found that the establishment in Asia was the only location that offered the quality that we required. Therefore, with Natureworks llc and their master manufacturer in textiles and using their world leading bio-polymer, Ingeo, we have been able to introduce to North America a range of fully compostable diapers and wipes with the full accreditation (ASTM-D 6400) (EN 13432).

All of us at BROODY CHICK continue to look for ways to help parents make informed choices about the products they use and the textiles that are close to and placed on their babies skin.

We are extremely proud and pleased to announce that our diapers, wipes and associated textile products have just been certified to carry the Oeko-Tex standard 100 Logo!

In the field of manufactured textiles products of all types, this certification is an internationally accepted standard and only awarded to manufactures of textiles that are ecologically harmless to humans and pose no risk whatsoever to health.

Furthermore, to ensure continued excellence in the manufacturing, Oeko-Tex reserves the right to spot check any manufacturer that carries the logo at any time and has informed all Logo users that 15% of us will be visited per annum. This will guarantee the highest level of manufacturing quality that is required to attain the certification.

We will always keep looking for ways to help you make informed choices for you, your children and our planet …because we care.

When I had the twins, I used cloth diapers a lot of the time from when they were around 3 months until they were around 9 months. My diaper of choice at that time was Sckoon Organic Cloth. I still have much love for these diapers, but I found that they fit really small. Their small fit lent themselves well to my girls who were preemies (3 pounds and change each at birth) but as they grew, even their petite figures were too much for the largest size.

Given the nature of our business, we are lucky enough to be able to test out a wide variety of products. Only those that we love pass the test and make it onto our site. One such brand is Sweet Pea Cloth Diapers.

I tested these out shortly after Josh was born and really liked them. In fact, I liked them a lot better than the Sckoon diapers. Why, you ask? Well, the one-size-fits-all first of all! I like to reduce my baby’s “bumprint” as much as possible and having to buy three different sizes of diapers means using more precious resources. Not to mention the fact it leaves me with a whole lot of diapers to try and give away when we are done with them. I can atest to the one-size-fits-ALL claim. My kids should be the poster children for this. These diapers are so adjustable (length and width) that they fit my skinny mini 2.5 year old girls and my MOOSE 10 month old son.

What else? The pocket! Pocket diapers were a new concept for me. What I like about this is that there is no cover needed for the diapers and the insert is super absorbent. I haven’t had these leak yet. The other thing is that the insert is so absorbent that it soaks up all the moisture inside and leaves the fleece that is up against your little one’s bum dry. I can actually reuse the diaper by simply changing the insert if it isn’t too wet. Less laundry!

So the question remains, why didn’t I switch over to these diapers after the test? I have no idea! It could’ve been the fact that I have three kids 2 and under and the thought of ANY extra work was too daunting. Maybe it is also that I love Earth’s Best Tendercare diapers.

What led me to switch to these fabulous diapers were two events. The first was garbage day. In our house that is my domain. One horrible, rainy morning, as I dragged three heavy garbage cans to the curb, I looked down our lane only to notice that we are the only ones on the block to put out so much garbage. Granted we have 2 suites on our property, but so does everyone else. How embarassing. And ironic since our neighbour’s kids call me Mrs. Green.

The second was Alicia’s sensitive skin. With the cold weather, her eczema is pretty bad. Diapers make her itchy in general so she was going out of her mind (so was I). In desperation, I grabbed my two sample diapers from our test and put one on her. She was instantly happy and not complaining. A miracle in my books.

So after these historic events we haven’t looked back. We use cloth 80% of the time on all 3 kids. I’m not sure why I thought it would be more work. It really isn’t. I’m constantly doing laundry anyway so I haven’t noticed a difference. I highly recommend you give these a try. They come in great colours and will last you through your child’s entire “diaper-hood”. If I can do it, so can you!

This morning I got a Google Web Alert notifying me that we got a mention in the Calgary Herald. There was an article about the come-back of reusable diapers http://www.leaderpost.com/story_print.html?id=2272059

It has some great tips for choosing a cloth diaper. Unfortunately the information on disposable diapers was a little outdated. While it was correct in pointing out the dangers of many of the “mainstream” disposables such as perfumes, chemicals and plastics, and the depletion of forests for their production, many of the new “eco-friendly” disposables are totally natural (no chemicals, dyes, perfumes, or plastic), can be composted (the wet ones), and are made from wood pulp from sustainable tree plantings (tree farms). Interesting fact is that the world’s first FULLY compostable diapers has just been introduced by Canadian company, Broody Chick. We are proud to carry their amazing product that is even packaged in recycled cardboard instead of plastic. Check them out.

Another thing was that it mentioned a mom that uses the President’s Choice Green Diapers for night time and at daycare. That mother may be interested in reading my blog post about Presidents Choice “green” products. While I didn’t comment on their diapers, I invite anyone to read the label very closely. It mentions that the diapers are moving towards being green. They are no where near the quality of the diapers that we carry. They are only partially green. Basically, you get what you pay for!

Thanks Herald for the mention as a resource on this wonderful movement toward having children with smaller eco-footprints!
