Ahh, the witching hour. From 7 till 10, when our newborn baby is well… crazy. As any parent of a newborn baby has done, I have read numerous articles and parts of books about the “C-word”… COLIC. Colic is defined as extended periods of crying, at least 3 hours per day, 3 days per week. Our new guy certainly fits that bill and more.
After spending a number of evenings pacing the floor with the little guy and investing in ear plugs (kidding), trying to console the inconsolable, it dawned on me that perhaps he might just be overtired. Even though he is only 5 weeks old, doesn’t he need a regular bedtime? All that crying all day must be exhausting!
I decided to do some research and found a number of articles saying that often times babies that are described as “colicky” are actually not colicky at all, they are just overtired. Many of them get overstimulated at the end of the day and need some peace and quiet.
I decided to try this out. Sure enough, as Josh cried and cried and cried, I put him in his bed with the lights low and his sound machine on (gotta love the white noise) and he stopped crying and fell asleep. So far he has only woken up a couple of times cause his soother fell out of his mouth and he goes back to sleep. The beauty of all this is that my husband and I have not had to pace the floor with the little guy all evening and I have had the time to eat a proper supper, clean up at bit and do some work. Wow!
It will be interesting to see if the little guy is in better spirits tomorrow having gotten more rest.
Food for thought.

Check out our March Newsletter.
This month we are introducing some great new feeding accessories that are definitely in the ‘must have’ category.
New This Month for March Feeding Frenzy
Babycubes
Making baby food? Check out Babycubes. Babycubes allow you to safely store your homemade baby food. Gone are the days of trying to freeze your home-made purees in small ice cubes trays and having to figure out how to cover them. Babycubes trays come with 8- 2oz cubes, each with their own attached lid allowing you to take one cube out of the freezer at a time and to feed the baby right out of the cube. Baby Cubes are BPA-free, microwave safe and dishwasher safe. Trays are stackable which is a great space saver for when you have several of these in your freezer at a time. We love ‘em! Check them out
here.
Steadycups
A new favourite in our house! Steadycups are the perfect first cup for your toddler as they graduate from a sippy. These cups have a wide, steady base to help prevent spills as your little one learns how to set a cup down without spilling their drink. Their small size and handle make these cups easier for your little one to hold. These cups are BP

A-free and are the winner of the 2005 Practical Pre-School Award and the Mother and Baby Gold Award. Get them
here.
Thinkbaby Feeding Set
We think we have found the best feeding set out on the market in the stainless steel department. This really is a complete feeding set for your little one. Each set comes with a bento box, soup bowl, baby bowl, cup, spoon and fork. What we love about these is that the bento box and bowls come with lids which make them perfect for taking on the go and for storing baby’s leftovers. The set is BPA-free, phthalate-free, PVC-free and melamine-free. The interior is made from stanless steel and exterior from polypropylene. A perfect shower gift! Check them out
here.

You’ve got to join the yoyomama facebook group cause there is great contest going on now. Post on their wall the answer to this question, “when you are out and about in the lower mainland, where are some good places you’ve found to feed your tot?”
There have been a great number of posts in response to this and as a fellow Lower Mainlander, I am appreciating all the fabulous tips, especially now that I have 2 toddlers and a brand new baby to nurse.
You’ll find tips for places that have great spots to nurse your baby, places with great play areas, places that will make some pureed food for your little one etc.
I just had to share this with you all cause I thought it was so great.
While their contest has been limited to the Lower Mainland, feel free to post some good ones from whereever you live here on our blog.

After having Josh 3 weeks ago, I am happy to report he is a lean, mean, breast-feeding machine. He has a great latch, is satisfied and we are both comfortable! It is already easy to forget the hell that we went through to get breast feeding on the right track over this last few weeks.
I thought I would post this because I never thought I would have any issues feeding this new arrival, especially since I successfully breastfed his twin sisters for 15 months. One baby, no problem. Yeah right.
What is supposed to be the most natural thing on earth, doesn’t always start out very smoothly. I have learned that natural, should not imply easy or painless. With my over supply and a baby with a poor latch as a result of trying not to drown, mastitis and crazy hormones, I was actually considering giving up after 10 days. The baby wasn’t gaining weight well, was fussy and I was sick as a dog. Not what one envisions after having a baby. Aren’t you supposed to nurse into the sunset…???
Being persistant is the key. I battled onward despite the toe curling pain, got some excellent help from a lactation consultant at the public health unit, and trusted by instincts. If you are a new mom and are having breast feeding issues, hang in there. It will get better if you get the right help. These things do take time to work out. I was so close to giving up and I am glad I didn’t. Breast feeding has many incredible benefits and I am glad to do it for my new son and myself. Happy feeding!
Nursing into the sunset,
J.
