Sippy Cups NOT Banned

On a recent shopping trip I was strolling through the baby isle at Shopper’s and was stopped in my tracks when I saw a sticker on a sippy cup package that exclaimed, “BPA free!” I found that a bit strange since my understanding of Health Canada’s BPA ban was that it included all baby products.

Turns out I was wrong after reviewing the Health Canada site. The only product pulled off store shelves were baby bottles. Sippy cups and dishes were not included. I am sure that I am not the only one who was mislead on this one. This is why I want to get the word out as I am sure that many parents out there have purchased sippy cups off store shelves assuming that they are safe. THEY ARE NOT! The only sippy I saw at Shopper’s that was BPA free was by Avent and it had the sticker on the front proclaiming it. All other sippy labels I looked at indicated that they were made anywhere from 2005 to 2007 so many of them must contain BPA. They don’t have to put it on the label anyway so who knows?!

Another thing to note is just because a product is BPA free, doesn’t mean it is safe. Many commonly found products on store shelves contain other potentially harmful chemicals that have not yet made the radar of Health Canada.

Another shock to me after reviewing Health Canada’s report on BPA was that there is great concern about the lining of formula cans. Apparently these contain BPA. I’m not sure why this didn’t make news headlines? I sure would have liked to know that! I breastfed the twins until one year when they decided to wean themselves. I followed the advice of my pediatrician and still use formula twice a day for the girls. Again, I wonder why this didn’t make headlines like the bottles did. Tell everyone you know because these products have not been pulled from shelves. I am going to do some more research on this issue and will post it to the blog.
